Which Tutor?

All parents share a concern about finding the right private tutor; those tutors who really can push up an exam grade or explain a difficult concept and who will return every week with dedication to helping a child succeed.

To assist you in selecting your tutor we've given each tutor the opportunity to talk about their qualifications, experience and approach to tutoring.

Tutoring Approach

Consider your prospective tutor's approach to tuition. You might be looking for someone to urgently prepare your child for exams or alternatively a more casual mentor your child can talk to about the subject areas they are finding difficult. Often the best tutoring relationships are formed where tutor and tutee have something in common. For example, matching tutees with tutors who share a similar interest or even language can make the first lesson more relaxed.

Specialist requirements

We provide the option to browse by specialist requirements. For example, if you or your child has limited English you can order your search by speakers of a second language (e.g. Mandarin / Urdu). Or if you are unable to travel, we list those tutors willing to travel to you first.

Tuition Intensity

If you are choosing a tutor for a child, we would recommend the following:

Primary - 1 hour sessions maximum; 30 - 45mins is often preferred. To make such tuition worth your tutor's while you may wish to consider tutoring for more than one child, so the tutor can teach two children for half an hour each.

Secondary/GCSE - 1 hour is fine; 1 hour 30 if your child has the stamina.

A-Level - 1 hour to 1.5 hrs if you are being tutored on a regular basis. 1.5 - 2.5 hours if you are cramming before exams.

Tuition Duration

Everyone looks for a tutor who can teach for a certain length of time. So, if you're looking for a tutor right through to exams in June be sure to state that you'll need someone for that period. We provide a form for parents to state how much tuition they estimate they will need when contacting tutors.
