Information About Bettina
Personal Description: Hi, I'm an undergraduate student of psychology at the University of Stirling, taking English studies and sociology as my other two courses. Since I'm German, English is not my first language, but I did spend a year in the U.S. as an exchange student at the age of 16 and have been living in Scotland for a few months. Furthermore, my language skills were accredited by the IELTS test, on which I received a score of 8.5 (out of 9.0).
Privately, I am interested in literature, music, and pretty much anything that will help me advance in my knowledge of human psychology.
Tutoring Experience: I was tutoring a 16-year-old male student in German Literature, with an emphasis on essay style, in January 2007, and will help him again with his English during the summer.
Tutoring Approach: To be able to achieve something, the student and the tutor need to work towards the same goal, in other words, the student needs to be motivated. We tend to enjoy what we are good at.
I believe that a large part of learning success depends on self-confidence. Therefore, I work with the student in identifying his or her strengths and weaknesses, usually by looking at some of their previous work, and start out with some simple excercises, which will build up their belief that they can handle the subject. These excercises slowly increase in difficulty, so that the student's skills will be built up gradually.
Of course this requires a certain degree of patience and trust, so that questions will be asked and mistakes will not be seen as a failure, but as a hint at what could be done to make the student feel more secure in that area.
