Information About Daniel
Personal Description: I am a young, enthusiastic, student at Trinity College in the University of Oxford. I am in my second year of a BA (Hons) course in English Language and Literature, with a specialization in Old and Middle English. I live in East Sussex and Oxford, and can teach from both locations, depending on the time of year.
Tutoring Experience: I travelled to Argentina in my GAP year, where I volunteered to teach English as a foreign language to students between the ages of 8 and 60, most of whom spoke almost no English. This was a formative experience, difficult and rewarding, but immensely enjoyable. I have since hugely benefited from the tutorial system of teaching at Oxford, which engages the student in a one-to-one dialogue with some of the finest minds in his or her chosen field.
Tutoring Approach: I try to make my students interested in their subject by engaging them in a dialogue, not lecturing to them. Ideas and concepts can only be understood properly if they have been thoroughly talked through. Teaching in the classroom rarely takes this form, so being unable to sit back or rely on others' answers might be uncomfortable at first, but you will soon be confidently expressing opinions and applying facts or examples that you have taken from the classroom or tutorial. Previously difficult concepts will become clear and simple. Performance in exams will improve naturally (and can also be honed in tutorials).
This method of teaching works for students of all levels and ages, and will help to foster a general enthusiasm for learning, as well as an ability to argue logically that will be useful to the student for life.
I teach in a clear and direct style. A typical tutorial might begin with setting targets for the lesson ahead, continue with a problem-solving discussion, and end by working through a few examples based on the material covered.
