Information About David
Personal Description: I am 30 years old and based in Luton. I am a patient and very enthusiastic teacher who loves working with young people. I left the Maths classroom in 2007 in order to pursue other interests, which include singing, life coaching and working with horses.
Tutoring Experience: I worked at a secondary comprehensive school in Hertfordshire for two years, where I taught Maths at KS3, GCSE and AS level. This was followed by four years at a large middle school in Bedfordshire, where my Year 6 classes' KS2 SATs results were consistently among the highest in the county. I was also Key Stage 3 Pastoral Co-ordinator at the latter, which involved supporting children with learning, emotional & behaviour difficulties such as ADHD. I am currently working at another middle school in Bedfordshire as Pastoral Consultant and Life Skills Coach.
Tutoring Approach: I pride myself on creating a safe and encouraging space in which my students feel comfortable asking questions and where every mistake is seen as an opportunity for learning.
I make use of a wipeboard for the purpose of explaining concepts and working through examples. My tutees often prefer to write on this too, rather than on paper, as mistakes can be easily rectified.
My teaching experience, as well as my training in child behaviour, coaching, communication & rapport skills, means I can quickly identify the preferred learning styles of my tutees and tailor my approach accordingly. I consider fun and laughter to be crucial aspects of the learning process and it is not uncommon for me to incorporate mathematical games and puzzles. Children burdened with labels such as ADHD are especially welcome to work with me.
Success in maths is so often a question of confidence. As a certified NLP Coach, I also share with my students simple yet highly effective confidence-boosting techniques, which can be applied to all aspects of their lives.
