Personal Description: I am currently a part-time support tutor in a college for performing arts working one-to-one with students aged 16+ in contextual studies such as anatomy, choreography, music theory and general literacy/study skills. I am the main carer for a disabled parent and have three lively rescue dogs who also take up quite a bit of my time.
Tutoring Experience: I trained as a teacher for the Junior/Secondary age range and taught for several years in the Kirklees area, mainly children aged 9-11. My last post in the Primary sector was as Advisory Teacher for KS2 English for Kirklees LEA. I have worked as a private tutor with children from the age of 6 to 16, teaching English and Maths.
Tutoring Approach: I have, over the years, seen many chidren with a very negative attitude to Maths which is the result of early failures and a subsequent lack of confidence. In big classes of mixed abilities children may receive very little individual attention and when they get things wrong they soon stop trying. I have found that a programme which builds up confidence through carefully targetted exercises and develops concepts in a fun, interactive way can bridge the gap between failure and success in Maths. Please note: I do not do exam coaching.
