Information About Gemma
Personal Description: I have recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and my ambition is to become a fully qualified secondary level teacher of English. I have taken both Language (phonetics, history and use of language in the media) and Literature (medieval Biblical writings, Victorian, Irish), I intend to work for a couple of years before applying for my PGCE. I wish to begin tutoring so I can continue working in the academic field and also get some experience to help me with my application. I also have some confidence in Maths and am very competent in the use of computers.
I am hard-working and enthusiastic and have wanted to work in teaching from a very young age, an ambition which I now working hard to fulfil.
Tutoring Experience: During my time in Sixth Form I went into a primary 6 classroom for 2 hours a week to assist the teacher. I helped children with their work, often one-on-one.
Tutoring Approach: I feel that a laid-back, open approach is most productive, especially with younger pupils. One-on-one tuition is very important, having watched my younger brother being tutored in Maths when he was preparing for his Eleven-Plus: the benefit was noticeable from the outset.
From my own experience I know it is often difficult to fully comprehend the work presented to us when studying and I feel it will be helpful to present different ways of breaking down information, especially in a subject like English where the texts can often be overwhelming. It is important with an English course to make the texts likeable and accessible, whether it is Shakespeare's plays or more contemporary authors. To that end I often found it helpful when I was in school when teachers would apply texts to our everyday lives to make them easy to relate to and, often, a bit more enjoyable. Context and background are also very important when studying English Literature and I feel that a short time spent on this can vastly improve a student's understanding of a text.
I want the student to feel that I am approachable and that any difficulty can be addressed, no matter how insignificant it may seem to them. Having stumbled over the (apparently) easiest of problems while studying myself, I can relate to this and will have the patience to go over each concept, regardless of subject, until both the student and myself are confident that they have grasped it.
Ultimately the tutoring experience should be fun - whilst still learning it is a break from school so should feel that way!
