Information About Helen
Personal Description: I began tutoring in my final year of university, and can safely say it is the only job I have ever enjoyed! It is immensely satisfying to be able to help a student realise their potential (especially when dealing with algebra, as that tends to take longer than most subjects to be understood!). I have always been academic, and tutoring seemed like the most potent way of using that to help others. My mother is a special needs assistant, and I think seeing her work and what she gets out of it inspired me to take a similar path. Based on the experience of my previous tutoring work, I have confidence in saying that I can create a strong relationship with a tutee and thus create a relaxed yet efficient environment in which to teach.
Tutoring Experience: I have two years of tutoring experience, the first through my university in the last year of my degree and the second as an independent tutor, and enjoyed great success with each of my previous students. I am confident that I can continue this positive work. I am also fully CRB checked.
Tutoring Approach: I find that the actual method of tutoring differs with each student, as they each have their own way of understanding things, and it is important to tailor my approach to match theirs. Building up a relationship with a tutee so that they feel fully comfortable in admitting when they don't understand things is very important. I appreciate that most students feel reluctant to put their hands up in class and ask for things to be explained to them, and so the one-on-one tutoring environment is a chance to take things at their own pace - and I make sure that they can make the most of this.
Qualifications:
GCSEs - Maths (A*), French (A*), Science (dual award) (A*), English language (A*), English literature (A)
From Julie Walsh (5/5): excellent tuition in a quiet, calm environment. Helen was able to assess quickly and efficiently and tailor the time to suit my son's needs. I would recommend her as a GCSE Maths tutor.
From Agoston Nelhubel (5/5): Helen is very friendly. She could find immediately the common voice with my son and he has already made huge improvement after only a couple of lessons. I can strongly recommand her as a teacher/tutor.
