Information About Ian
Personal Description: I am a barrister who has practiced in the South East for a number of years now, having chambers in both Sussex and Kent. My main areas of practice are criminal law (predominantly defence work) and licensing law. In addition, I have experience in company and charity law. My practice as a barrister brings in a wide variety of work ranging from small theft cases to armed robberies, impotrtation of drugs and murder/attempted murder cases and I regularly represent clients at all levels from Magistrates and Crown Courts to the High Court and Court of Appeal.
Further to my main work I am also a Director of a company based in the South East that operates public houses and a local councillor. Also, I act as a Trustee to a number of local charities.
Professional Memberships: The Honourable Society of the Inner Temple; The South Eastern Circuit; The Criminal Bar Association and The Bar Union.
Tutoring Experience: I have offered tuition in Law for the past 5 years. I also participate in a "sponsor" scheme, organised by the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple aimed at giving general support, be it educational or practical, to students that are training as barristers. I also take part in the Bar Council's "Speakers for Schools" initiative, which provides practising barristers to give careers advice in schools.
Tutoring Approach: I am a very relaxed and approachable individual who accepts that different students will learn in different ways. This is also very much dependant on the level at which each individual is currently studying. The tuition service I provide is certainly not intended to replace the role of the classroom teacher or university lecturer, it is more to build upon that and to assist students in areas that they perhaps find more difficult. I am also well used to providing assistance that is specifically aimed at revision of particular areas in the run-up to exams or coursework submission.
Schools, colleges and univerisities tend to centre most of their teaching in relation to law very much upon text books that are often very bland. This sometimes makes the subject hard to understand or put into context. Given that I am a practising lawyer I feel that my approach with students is able to give them a much better understanding of how the laws in the text books actaully work in real-life, which usually promotes a much better understanding of the subject.
