Information About Ian

Personal Description: I am a professional physicist who spent 15 years working in private industry, finally specialising in the development of software for computer users with visual impairments and software aids to help children with print impairments. I have three children who have been or are being home educated. I love anything mechanical and anything old. I have published a book on the history of Droitwich Spa Lido and have recently been at the forefront of an ultimately successful campaign to have Droitwich Lido reopened. My interests are many and varied but I do particularly enjoy teaching maths, physics, chemistry and ICT.

Tutoring Experience: I have been tutoring in the evenings and at weekends for a number of years before moving into tutoring full-time in 2007. I am a specialist in access and educational software, and a regular contributor to parenting magazines on education issues. This ensures that I am fully conversant with the latest developments in teaching techniques and working with the visually impaired and print impaired means you must be crisp and lucid in your explanations.

(My profile picture is of me giving a talk on digital access to educational materials at The University of Leeds)

Tutoring Approach: I offer a free initial meeting to allow us to get to know one another and to work through the issues with your studies you feel you might be having. We can then plan out lessons together or simply concentrate on those aspects that you feel most unhappy with. If you don't understand something the first time around then I will try another way. There is always more than one way to explain a topic - a fact that a lot of teachers and tutors seem, sadly, to neglect. I try to make flexibility the key to my approach.

You may have found other tutors listed here quote much lower hourly rates. The trouble with private tuition is that you tend to get what you pay for. Unlike other tutors my services do not come with any extra hidden charges, such as high rates for travelling expenses or charging extra to supply old exam papers (some even charging extra to mark them). I also run an extremely popular, well established maths website (which I am unable to mention here due to First Tutors listing policy) which includes on-line e-learning courses and on-line maths help. Included in my fees is free unlimited access to these services - another great benefit (and a great advantage for you or your children) that other tutors simply cannot provide.
