Information About James

Personal Description: I completed a degree and masters in Natural science at Girton College, Cambridge between 1996 and 2000. This was chiefly spent studying chemistry, though I also did modules in cell biology, geology, history of science and mathematics. I now work as a science technician at a secondary school on the South coast and have great fun helping out around the department-generally doing slightly crazy experiments!

Tutoring Experience: I have been tutoring a number of students on a one-to-one basis for the past 5 years. This has been in a wide range of subjects: combined science and separate sciences at GCSE; and maths and chemistry at A-level. I have tutored students who just need an extra push to get to a grade C at GCSE as well as pupils who need a little extra to make it to grade A at A-level for university entrance. I work in a secondary school and frequently help out in classes and as such am experienced with the new science GCSE's introduced recently by the different exam boards.

Tutoring Approach: I aim to create a relaxed learning environment for my students where they can ask me any questions on the subject at any time. Usually I spend half of one session going over any problems a student has had during the week, and then follow with a second half based on relevant exam questions. I encourage frequent contact by email so that if a particular problem crops up during the week, I can prepare materials to go through it during the next tutorial. However every student is different and I like them to give me feedback so I can tailor each session to their particular leaning style.
