Information About James
Personal Description: Hi! My name is James and I am 18 years old.
I love what life has to offer me! I look forward to my future every time I wake up, simply because I know I can be happy and have what I want. I love other people and want to help them love themselves - not as they should be, but as they are.
I am a first year student at the University of Abertay Dundee and I am studying BSc Computer Games Technology - I LOVE video games (Sonic's my favourite). Having been living in Dundee for nearly a month at the time of writing this, I can say it is a very nice Scottish city with great views and great places to go. I am so glad I made the decision to study here.
I am very fond of Japanese manga and anime (comics and animated comics). The art is very appealing as well as the incredible storylines some have (Fullmetal Alchemist, Fruits Basket and Death Note to name a few). I even know a little Japanese and I hope to learn more! It sounds so cute!
My high optimism has been the result of a field of self-help Psychology called Neuro Linguistic Programming - or NLP. I could not believe it when I discovered it. It was what I wanted for just about all of my life - COMPLETE control of my brain, both conscious and unconscious. It revolves around the idea that we as humans have plenty of resources to get to where we want in life. It is the same psychological field used by Paul McKenna and Michael Neill in their self-help books. If you want to get what you want out of life, this is the ONLY way you can do it (in my opinion). Most other systems out there are commercially orientated!
I also like to read, watch TV, hang out with my friends and relax in general. Currently, I am writing a book. It is a combination of a self-help guide, a study guide and a modern society book - designed to be read by students for their years at school. In this book I am really ruthless in putting my foot down and saying how society's education needs to be changed. Hopefully once I am done, I can get it published!
That's more or less me. :)
Tutoring Experience: Last year I tutored my friend at Standard Grade Maths Foundation Level - he felt he was really struggling and needed help. Not only did he receive a Grade 5, he learned a little bit of General Level Maths which is now helping him with his Intermediate 1 course, as well as the basic building blocks of self-motivation and confidence.
I have helped classmates several times during my school years on a wide range of subjects and they have always said I should consider tutoring as a living. Now, I am giving it a go.
Tutoring Approach: My approach is radically different.
The greatest myth of learning is quite persistant in today's society: 'We learn by taking in information'. In reality, we learn our PERCEPTION of information. In other words, if we perceive (say) Maths as boring, we will recall boring facts and not be willing to learn more. But if we perceive it as interesting, we will recall facts that catch our interest (and that state of mind will make us want to learn MORE). If you take a glance at the way students learn, you will see this is definitely true.
So this is why that when I teach, I will do whatever it takes to make the subject as amazing as possible. I will NOT use traditional school methods as I honestly think they are counter productive (who wants to learn by going to a classroom and being forced to do as you are told with no questions asked?).
Now as insane as this sounds, I am very sincere when I say it. The tutee can do WHATEVER they want during the lesson. They can write answers to questions, hear me talk about the subject, or even talk about general life problems they may have. I will respond in kind. I will make THEM feel in control of their own learning. That is the essential trait which has followed every bright student who ever lived.
However, the catch is that the tutee MUST be willing to get better at the subject of their own free will - not of a pushy parent's will. If this is not the case, I will refuse my services. Therefore when you contact me I will call back at an arranged time to conduct a short telephone interview. This is so I can determine if you are a suitable client or not (and I WILL find out if any false information is given). The interview also better prepares me for the job.
If you have doubts then you should be aware that the first hour is FREE. You have nothing to lose, but definitely a lot to gain. Give it a try and you will be surprised!
You only need to look at my results to see I am very serious about where I stand. If you are interested, get in touch through e-mail with the appropriate details. I will then try and work out if I can take you on as a client. My hours are limited but I will try the best I can.
