Information About Jennifer

Personal Description: I have just completed my degree in English Literature at King’s College London, in order to indulge my passion for reading and study, before entering the challenging and competitive working industry; I feel my degree in English enabled me to develop my skills in critical thinking and allowed me to gain valuable life experience. As an English graduate, my career aspiration is secondary school teaching, but I also have vast experience in the teaching of drama to primary school students. Whilst at university I have juggled a part time job, leading a volunteer programme, and directing, producing and performing in many productions throughout London, as my primary passion is acting; these experiences have enhanced my communication skills and taught me to work efficiently within a group, as a leader or cast member. The majority of my evenings are spent at the theatre; I am especially enjoying the Donmar season at present, particularly the musical production of Parade, and Shakespeare’s Othello. I myself have recently directed productions of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! and Jason Robert Brown’s Songs For A New World with King’s and Goldsmith’s Musical Theatre; my career aspiration is indeed the stage. Obviously I adore literature, and have just completed my dissertation on Virginia Woolf and Michael Cunningham; I also specialise in Shakespeare and Austen, though I am currently enjoying Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. Last summer, I undertook the challenge of travelling around Mexico, an unforgettable experience, which certainly aided me in gaining further life experience, forcing me to think more independently, and teaching me to appreciate such a contrasting, yet beautiful, country and culture.

Tutoring Experience: OCT 2008 – CURRENT: DOG KENNEL HILL SCHOOL
CLASSROOM ASSISTANT
· Having been employed with Classroom Teachers' agency for just three weeks, I was immediately offered a permanent position at this lovely school. I am teaching their Year One class and thriving on aiding the children specifically with their literacy and speaking skills; I am especially involved with support work for a few key children, and spend certain periods of the day tutoring them individually. I am in the process of setting up an after-school drama club for the Key Stage Two students at the school, as well as directing the infant school Christmas play.

SEP – OCT 2008: CLASSROOM TEACHERS
CLASSROOM ASSISTANT
· Though a recent addition to the Classroom team, I have received thoroughly positive feedback from the schools in which I have been teaching over the past few weeks; colleagues have reported me as reliable, enthusiastic and hard-working, as well as possessing excellent interaction skills with the children themselves. Currently I have been working with nursery children, and am thriving on the responsibility of working with early years. However, I am looking forward to future positions within secondary schools, in order to use my English literature and Drama tutorage skills to the maximum.

SEP 2006 – JUNE 2008: CHILDREN’S THEATRE WORKSHOP, VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME WITH KING’S COLLEGE LONDON:
FOUNDER AND LEADER
· Creating exciting opportunities for children in under-privileged schools in Southwark (beginning with Charlotte Sharman Primary School), to participate in dramatic workshops has been one of the most rewarding achievements of my university career. It has taught me to build and lead my own team of student volunteers, and to liase with people in scholastic authority, as well as having great fun with the children themselves. I was responsible for the programme’s administration (including liasing with the school, council and parents via phone and in person, being their first point of contact), as well as being actively involved in carrying out the workshops themselves. Working with children certainly teaches you to be constantly alert, enthusiastic, positive and organised.

SEP 2005 - DEC 2008: KING'S MUSICAL THEATRE (extra-curricular university project)
DIRECTOR & PRODUCER
· During my three years studying English Literature and Language at King's College London, I directed and produced many productions throughout London, as my primary passion is acting; these experiences have enhanced my communication skills and taught me to work as a leader, whether in group casting or one-to-one direction with young actors. Responsibility, organisation and passion for your work are most certainly the key points of direction.

JUNE 2002: HARFORD MANOR SCHOOL, IPSWICH ROAD, NORWICH:
TEACHING ASSISTANT
· Teaching has always been a career aspiration for me, and working with children with special needs at Harford Manor allowed me to improve my leadership and mentoring skills, as well as experiencing working as part of a team with my fellow teachers.

Tutoring Approach: I believe that the teaching of drama and theatre studies is often neglected within schools today, often purely due to lack of resources or funding; my aim is to introduce drama further into the English curriculum, whilst also indulging my passion for teaching literature and language to students. My aspiration is to teach English and Drama to GCSE and A-level students, and I would be delighted to tutor University students also, having recently gained such first-hand experience myself. My teaching experience with younger children has also cemented my love of early years tutorage.
