Information About John

Personal Description: Most of my postgraduate professional life has been spent working in alternative medicine, as Principal of an acupuncture school, an acupuncturist and classroom and clinic teacher. My teaching experience includes anatomy as well as acupuncture theory and practice, general health care and personal/professional development/ ethics, and now mathematics.

I spent 20 years working within the acupuncture profession to establish educational and practice-based standards, including establishing the Professional Accreditation of acupuncture colleges and University Validation of acupuncture courses. I have been both a board member of and consultant to the British Acupuncture Accreditation Board and the British Acupuncture Council. I have spent approximately 15,000 contact hours in classroom and clinic-based teaching since 1978.

Whilst living in Spain between July 2000 and May 2008, I developed an interest in teaching children maths and English. This came about as a result of teachers at Sotogrande International School recognising that I had tutoring skills to offer via my work as a volunteer football coach for children age 7 to 18 which I carried out for over six years.

I thus spent seven years as personal tutor to over 200 children in Spain, (KS2 to KS4), many of who had moderate to severe learning difficulties. Immediately prior to my return to the UK in May 2008, I spent one term as a specialist maths tutor in an International School, working with a group of students who had scored poorly in their mock IGCSE maths exam.

Many of the skills I acquired in teaching adults have been transferred to helping children to learn more effectively. I enjoy making the learning experience clear, fun and informal, whilst motivating students to acquire a deeper understanding of the subject and of the gifts embedded in life-long learning and the achievement of personal goals in terms of their roundedness as human beings.

I enjoy working alongside students in exploring ways of discovering knowledge and gaining authentic understanding. I enjoy researching and preparing for teaching sessions and love to facilitate learning and to inspire others to learn. I have a large professional portfolio of Continuing Professional Development, as driven by my reflective practitioner upbringing. I enjoy helping young people to reach their educational and personal aspirations, about which I feel passionate.
