Personal Description: I'm a student at Cambridge looking to give tutoring to GCSE, A-level and University entrance standard.
I think of myself as a pretty happy person and my tutorials are likely to be full of jokes from acerbic sarcasm to the ridiculous.
Tutoring Experience: - Taught Physics once a week whilst in sixth form.
- Extensive public speaking gave me knowledge of how best to get information across
- I have 4 supervisions a week at Cambridge (same as being tutored) so I have great experience of what 'works' and what is terrible tutoring technique.
Tutoring Approach: I look to get the concepts behind the science across, it's where that funny niggle of "but WHY does[n't] this happen?" comes from and lack of this knowledge is the key problem to so many students.
The safety net this understanding provides gives exam confidence to students; they can answer any question rather than hoping like hell their 'learnt by rote' material comes up and panicing if it doesn't.
I use long question strings, whereby progressive answers on the same topic go through continually harder material from year 8 through to post-A-level. This is just a careful build of intuition on known material and it gives students a real buzz to know that they can give good answers to Oxbridge interview questions I finish with (please don't let your son/daughter know this in advance).
eg. stretching a spring, simple balance of forces on spring, complex balance of forces, with/without gravity, simple harmonic motion (A-level), behaviour in variable acceleration.
Interview preparation for Oxford/Cambridge is perhaps my strongest area, I know the system inside-out and even worked as a forum moderator for Oxbridge Applications. Tutoring available for all Science interviews AND general tricks for ANY subject plus college discussion.
