Information About Jordana

Personal Description: I am a 27 year old female teacher currently working in a high school in Suffolk. I have always had a passion for English. I came into teaching after working as a learning assistant supporting students with behavioural and learning difficulties and feel that I have found my choosen career for life. I feel like one of those lucky people who actually looks forward to getting to work in the mornings!
I think its important to be able to relate teaching and learning to each individual student and to encorporate their own interests into their learning experience.

Tutoring Experience: I have been teaching since January 2005 when I began a GTP training course in a high school in Essex. During my training year I was able to gain a vast experience across the different age groups withing the school, teaching at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level students.
After successfully completing my GTP year I was employed by a high school with specialist status in English and Humanities in Ipswich in January 2006 where I became a member of a very supportive and forward thinking department. This is where I currently work, teaching both English and Media Studies across the age and ability spectrum of the student population. I am also a Year 10 tutor and a Year 11 mentor.
Prior to training as a teacher I also worked as an academic mentor for Key Stage 3 students, supporting them with their learning and helping them to overcome any academic issues. I believe my experience working with students with learning and behavioural difficulties has helped me to maximise my teaching ability. I supported students in all subjects which provided me with the knowledge of how subjects compliment each other across the curriculum. I also feel that working with students who were disconnected from their education for various reasons helped me to develop strategies to minimise disruptive behaviour and reasoning skills.
I am currently tutoring a grammar school student who is preparing to sit her GCSE's this summer. She is a very bright student, predicted to achieve A grades in her final exams.

Tutoring Approach: In my tutoring I believe that one to one discussion is important in the understanding of a piece of work, be it poetry, literature, drama or any other type of media. Through discussion different levels of understanding become apparent. I also believe that discussion based work helps to build up confidence in ones own ability and overcome fears of speaking ideas out loud. It is important to enjoy education and sometimes in a school environment this enjoyment can be lost due to large class sizes, constant deadlines and examinations. I enjoy what I do and it is important to me that my students do to. I work on the principle that if a student wants to actually come to a lesson and leaves with a smile on their face thinking that the lesson was actually quite fun then I've over come the biggest hurdle. When a student feels happy and confident to be in a learning environment they can then begin to maximise their potential.
