Information About Katy

Personal Description: My name is Katy and I am currently an undergraduate student of Biochemistry. I'm 19 years old, which I think gives me the added advantage of being on the same level as the student, and certainly have found this in the past. I enjoy reading and socialising with friends and feel that my bubbly personality helps me to interact with the students better than a teacher could.

Tutoring Experience: I have much teaching work experience to support my application for teaching this year, in both primary and secondary schools. Also I regularly took on tutoring roles in my home town during holidays from university. However I have now moved to Nottingham permanently so will not be able to continue with these!
My favourite example of tutoring work that I have undertaken would be tutoring a 10 year old dyspraxic (I'm very slightly dyspraxic myself) to pass his 11+ exam, which (although he has not got the results yet) I'm certain he has done, with flying colours! The best part about this was helping the child to reach his full potential, which without my help, I feel he could not have done.

Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring differs with age and subject. I offer a free first session of 1 hour in which I assess the problem areas and the method of tutoring that would work best for the student, and I also find this allows the student to see whether they feel we will get on and they can learn from me.
With primary school children, I tend to be less focused on exam and test results and more on the child's understanding of the subject to prepare them for later study, for example by turning the subjects into a game with prizes! However at GCSE and A Level, I tend to try to teach the student study skills and effective and efficient learning int he little time that we have available. This could be oral, aural or visual learning, whichever the student finds works best for them. As I say, the first hour is free for this assessment and you are under no obligation to continue with the tutoring if you feel it will not work out for you!
