Information About Kurt
Personal Description: I feel over the past year I have made a strong and positive contribution whilst working at Gosforth and using my own initiative, I feel I have excelled when working as part of the team. I am energetic and enthusiastic with good analytical, design and problem solving skills and am committed to achievement and continuous development of students. If appointed, I would be able to apply and build upon my current experience in managing students, courses and resources in a highly successful department within a progressive high school.
My past experience has shown that I have developed my teaching strategies. Over the past 5 years I have successfully taught A’ Level Computing, Applied ICT, AVCE, GNVQ, DIDA course and KS3. I have also demonstrated good practice using my knowledge and insight from working for exam boards, to help students and staff members with progression of the GNVQ, GCSE, AVCE and Applied ICT courses. As a result of course changes I have also now been appointed on the panel for new DIDA course which will be starting next summer.
At Northallerton College I gained valuable experience from being appointed temporary head of KS4 for ICT. This gave me the opportunity to demonstrate innovative vision, direction and I have developed teaching and learning and managing staff.
Having been almost two thirds of the way through the KS4 course, I felt at the time it was important to have focused on the interests of the current KS4 students’ - their interest were to be protected by acting promptly to remedy any deficiencies in the current system. This was done by implementing a strategy which involved developing new scheme of work for five months to help with areas that were unfinished. Extra lessons were added on, staffing had to be reorganised and new resources developed. It also allowed the team the ideal opportunity to learn and grow from these changes and apply the knowledge gained to future work and thus progressively plan.
This was challenging, perhaps somewhat stressful, but ultimately I felt it was an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity. It gave me the opportunities to fully utilise the skills and techniques that I have been developing as a teacher. With the ultimate aim of not only developing myself personally, I also had the challenge of helping to produce the most successful results achievable for each pupil and for the school, as a result - 90% of students successfully passed.
I value and respect the students and believe that educational development is only part of their all round personal and social growth. Increasingly young people leaving school must be multi-skilled. To help with this I will bring new ideas from attendance of a recent course which is part of the University of the First Age which I am known Fellow. I will be able to bring new ideas such a ‘brain storming’ mind mapping and various other enigmatic ideas to help with the progression of the student on all courses. I have already tried this with my Year 10 and 11 and
have seen a dramatic improvement in their results. I truly believe students ability to learn depends on important certain factors like their emotional state.
I feel as an ICT Achievement coordinator within the department I have ensured the following is carried out;
(1) To create a set of activities that has helped ensure that every student exhibits high quality learning;
(2) Developed strategies for improving attendance, behaviour, respect for each other and harmony, and as a consequence, improving the quality of our school environment for teaching and learning. (During Ofsted, observed 5 times and was graded with 1 excellent 3 very goods and a good).
(3) Coordinated with parents to ensure those students who haven’t applied themselves are fully aware of student’s performance.
How have I helped to fulfil this criterion in my role as Achievement coordinator in ICT department? In my Methods of Educational Enquiry I have outlined and plans for students to improve their learning where they are in danger of underperforming. Being an academic school there is a level of expectation from students, parents and staff.
As Achievement coordinator in the department I am always looking forward to dealing with new challenges for example: taking over the mentoring of NQTs’; co-ordinating and timetabling of I.T.T students, taking responsibility and organising of Parental. Meetings; and delivering inset training to the department, but ultimately – the challenge of developing the departmental strategy in terms of development of course, staff timetabling and staff development. I would seek to foster co-operation within teams. I would like to support the professional development of individuals and have managed curriculum changes positively; look to ensure that all team members were confident with the development. I appreciate the varying amounts of time commitment, experience and recognising the vital importance of maintaining the credibility of the course, and consistency in achieving national standards.
I am confident that my degree subjects, my consistently successful academic and vocational teaching, my understanding of the courses my experiences and relevant recent training make me well suited to the position. Underlying all this I enjoy teaching and working with students both within the curriculum and extra curriculum activities. I like my chosen career and believe that I have the drive and ambition to develop myself further.
