Personal Description: I am a professional scientist currently taking a break from my 12 year postdoctoral research career in the field of neonatal immunology to look after my (almost) 2 year old son. I obtained my first degree and PhD from the University of Liverpool and I have held research posts at The University of Liverpool, The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, The Institute of Child Health at Great Ormond Street Hospital, The Edward Jenner Institute for Vaccine Resarch and most recently The University of Portsmouth and I have fourteen published papers in national and international science journals. I am friendly, easygoing, and infinitely patient with a wealth of experience in the art of understanding science, learning and taking exams! Above all I am truly passionate about science and always aim to pass on my enthusiasm to those I teach.
Tutoring Experience: I have attended University-run lecturing courses and during my research career I have regularly tutored both undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have given lectures and also designed and run practical modules at postgraduate level. I am an approved part time lecturer for The University of Portsmouth School of Biological Sciences.
Tutoring Approach: Before I begin providing tuition, I will do a preliminary needs analysis. This allows me to map out a clear and focused approach to address the specific learning needs of the tutee. I set out to build confidence by making the subject fun and and relevant and by engaging the student so that learning is an interactive process.
The overall aim is for the student to thoroughly understand a concept before attempting to learn for exams.
