Information About Mary
Personal Description: I am a qualified and experienced primary school teacher, born in 1954 in the UK and have worked both full time and as a supply teacher over many years. I have three children and presently work for an Older People's Team, in the Community Services Department of my local County Council, part time, which I enjoy, but I also still like to keep in touch with teaching through some private tutoring of primary age school children, teaching numeracy and literacy.
Tutoring Experience: Working as a full time primary school teacher in North Yorkshire and as a supply teacher in Shropshire over many years, also in the primary age range.
Tutoring Approach: All children are presently expected to reach certain average standards of attainment during their school lives, and it is very worrying for children and their parents/guardians if they fall below these benchmarks. They may fall behind for many reasons, and sometimes this becomes a self perpetuating problem as children lose confidence. A little help can go a long way to bringing children back up to their expected level, and provide much needed confidence. I do not teach according to age, but according to ability and will go back to curriculum specified for much earlier age ranges if that is where the child is at, obviously in a tactful manner. I am always mindful of SATS levels, but do not "teach to the test", more teach to help in understanding.
I use a variety of methods, depending on the child, including Toe by Toe, Gamz CD, Workbooks, and ICT, and always refer to National Standards Site for Literacy and Numeracy for extra guidance and lesson suggestions. I will always supply homework by worksheet or book if that is what the child and parent require. I am always open to discussion about methods and timing and frequency of lessons. I do not generally work through the school holidays.
