Information About Matthew George

Personal Description: I'm a former Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Sussex who now works as a freelance writer and educator in Suffolk. I spent sixteen years teaching at various universities across Britain and have published nine books, mostly aimed at a Sixth-Form and general audience. Coming from a family of teachers, I'm very familiar with the demands of the current National Curriculum and how they can be successfully achieved, and I'm an enthusiastic and committed teacher with all levels of students.

Tutoring Experience: During my career, I've taught every period of English literature (including courses on contemporary children's literature, modern poetry and writing from other cultures), as well as a variety of courses on language and grammar, creative writing and practical criticism. I also have extensive experience of teaching history, especially the medieval and modern periods; I have a particular personal interest in the First and Second World Wars. I've taught students at all levels and from all over the world, not just in universities but also in schools and Sixth-Form colleges all over the country.

Tutoring Approach: A good tutor needs to supply students with a clear, precise structure to follow when learning. This not only helps to support their understanding, but also gives them something to react against when testing their own ideas and theories - an essential part of any education process. But a good tutor also needs to be enthusiastic about the topic and must communicate that enthusiasm to the student. They must also be committed to the student's eventual success in that topic; by working together in a relaxed yet academically rigorous way, this educational target can be successfully reached.
