Information About Moores

Personal Description: I am an undergraduate at the University of York studying for a BA (Hons) in History, though I am currently on an academic year out (details and circumstances available on request) and so I am in Manchester until October. I live only twenty minutes from Manchester Piccadilly and so I am able to travel widely in and around the city centre, either by train or bus. I read widely on a variety of subjects and I read The Times daily, as well as several other newspapers online. My pet hate is bad grammar with particular venom reserved for the misuse of an apostrophe. I have a particular fondness for Ancient Roman history, the Napoleonic Wars and the World Wars though I enjoy all aspects of historical study.

Tutoring Experience: I tutored my own sister for her GCSE examinations in English and mathematics and I have also tutored several of my friends' siblings in subjects as diverse as religious stuides, biology and geography, though my strengths certainly lie in the Arts side.

Tutoring Approach: I find that a tutor who sits opposite a student and lectures them in a dull monotone is, to put it bluntly, useless. As such, I prefer to involve the student through debate and discussion. I also believe that humour in teaching is very important and as such I try to make the student laugh as they learn. This has a double benefit: it establishes a rapport between the tutor and student and it also helps with retention as a student remembers more of a lesson when they have enjoyed it. I also encourage the student to debate a topic with me, a discussion in which I take the role of devil's advocate, so as to help them understand it better. This works particularly well in religious studies. As most people are not fortunate enough to have an eidetic memory I believe that each student's teaching plan should be tailored to their particular needs. Some people learn best through visual stimulation, for example, while others have higher retention rates if music is involved in teaching. This being the case, I would assess your child's particular learning style and mould my teaching plan around them.
