Information About Paul

Personal Description: I have a degree in Theology from Durham University with a particular focus on biblical languages. I am now returning to a previous fascination with science and mathematics. I have a place to study for a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge commencing in October. I have a very broad academic range and this enhances my ability to explain subjects in a simple and straightforward way, being aware of how jargon can disguise the common sense of a subject. A broad background also enables me to make connections between different subjects and enrich the learning experience.

Through involvement in youth work in various different contexts I have extensive experience of working with and inspiring young people, particularly those who are low in confidence and self-esteem. I am able to relate easily to those who find that academic study does not come naturally to them.

Tutoring Experience: I spent my gap year working for a professional theatre-in-education-company. This involved performing and teaching in schools at all age levels. I have taught Theatre Studies at GCSE level at Reading Grammar school and have taught mathematics as a personal tutor at KS3 level.

I taught Hebrew informally to other students who were finding the language challenging on my course. Both received excellent final marks, despite an initial lack of confidence.

I have run theatre workshops with young people in various different contexts. I have also done a lot of youth work, involving giving talks and running discussions with young people.

Tutoring Approach: I am entirely flexible in my approach, able to do an intensive, syllabus-focussed exam preparation or a more open exploration of a particular subject.

As a general approach, the most fundamental thing I attempt to do is to take some of the fear out of learning and encourage genuine understanding as a primary motivation.

In a relaxed but focussed style, I try and get pupils to play with subjects, making connections, asking questions and seeing patterns for themselves. I build up their ability to trust their problem-solving instincts and to enjoy grappling with a difficult problem, rather than simply asking me or the revision guide for the answer. I try to get pupils to become curious and ask questions when they don't know something, rather than being immediately discouraged.

While this is excellent preparation for examinations and further study, it also gives pupils a sense of self-confidence and achievement which is much larger than just a good exam result.

It also means that pupils can being to enjoy in-depth study for its own sake, making academia less of a chore and resulting in more confident participation in the classroom.
