Information About Rachael

Personal Description: I am a confident and enthusiastic graduate with a passion for education. In 2006 I graduated with a 2:1 BA (Hons) in American (United States) Studies at the University of Essex. As part of my degree I spent a year studying at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Following my undergraduate degree, I studied for a Masters in the Sociology of Nation, Citizenship and Human Rights. Whilst finishing my Masters, I began a job at the Houses of Parliament working with both their Visitor Services team and the Parliamentary Education Service. I am now working in after-school clubs and as a teaching assistant prior to beginning a PGCE course in September.

Tutoring Experience: In 1999, I completed two weeks of work experience at Glebe County Junior School. The head teacher wrote in her report of my time at the school that I was a ‘natural teacher’ and recommended that I pursue teaching as a career path. Since this early work experience, I have continued to work with children. As a Millennium Volunteer I completed two hundred hours of voluntary work, including working at a Sunday School with two to five year olds and at holiday clubs for five-thirteen year olds. In 2003, I spent the summer working as a general counsellor at Camp ABC. Camp ABC is one of five camps run by The Fresh Air Fund, an organisation which caters for underprivileged children in the New York City area. My job required me to be a guide and a role model to the group of twelve campers in my cabin.

As part of my degree scheme I spent a year studying abroad. My year at the University Of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) was undoubtedly the best of my life. During Spring Break, I spent a week in Watts, South Central Los Angeles working at the ‘Lighthouse Community Church’ tutoring children from the local housing projects. Watts is a predominantly Latino community in which almost half of the residents live below the poverty line. It was immediately obvious that the children I tutored faced many challenges in their day-to-day lives. Following this experience, I was compelled to write my dissertation on the situation that I witnessed in Los Angeles focusing particularly on the impact of the policies of the California State Government. I also pursued my interest through classes on offer at UCSB on the history of Chicano education, the relationship between culture, education and development and the social cultural context of education. In addition, I worked at an after-school educational club for two months in a low-income district of Santa Barbara where once again striking inequalities were visible. On returning home, it was obvious that many of the issues I saw being played out in California were becoming increasingly important and contentious in Britain with the introduction of Citizenship to the National Curriculum, a growing impetus towards teaching ‘Britishness’ and the continuing debates surrounding faith schools. As a result, I chose to continue my studies, embarking on a Masters in Sociology of Nation, Citizenship and Human Rights. For my dissertation, I again focused on educational policy, considering the relationship between the Citizenship Curriculum and national identity.

The Citizenship Curriculum also featured in my previous job as a Visitor Assistant at the Houses of Parliament. My position involved working with the Parliamentary Education Service giving tours of the Palace of Westminster. The Parliamentary Education Unit runs visit programmes aimed at encouraging young people to become interested and involved in the workings of Parliament. During my time at Parliament I worked with children at all stages of their education from Key Stage 1 through to University students. The content of the visit varied dependent on which subject the school trip was linked with; History, Law, Politics, Citizenship or General Studies.

Tutoring Approach: Due to my extensive experience working with children outside of the classroom setting, I am an approachable and flexibile tutor responding to the individual needs and interests of those I am working with. I am positive and encouraging; my main aim being that students achieve their potential. The subjects which I tutor are ones that I am passionate and enthusiastic about; which I believe is essential to academic success. English Literature was my favourite subject throughout my education and over 25% of my degree was Literature-based. I am an avid reader and enjoy both the classics and current bestsellers. Throughout both my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, I researched issues of Citizenship and for my Masters' dissertation I explored the Citizenship Curriculum. In my role as a Visitor Assistant at the Houses of Parliament, my work with the Parliament Education Service was closely linked to the Citizenship Curriculum. During my studies at the University of Essex, I completed an advanced course in Spanish and in the summer of 2006 I worked in Andalucia for three months in order to enhance my language skills. Roughly half of my degree was history-based; my particular areas of interest are Native Americans, the Civil Rights Movement, the English Civil War and Parliamentary history. I can share my knowledge, experience and most importantly, my enthusiasm with those I tutor.
