Information About Rachel
Personal Description: I am a qualfied and experienced tutor, with 10 years teaching experience in a range of schools, from seconday grammars and comprehensives to primary schools and special schools. I am comfortable and happy with teaching any age range, from KS1 right through to secondary ages and adults who wish to brush up on their skills.
I offer tuition in my own home, which is in New Romney, Kent, and which offers a quiet and calm enviornment conducive to learning. I am unable to travel in order to tutor, unless within my very immediate locality, in which case a small additional charge would be added to the fee for the extra time and cost spent travelling.
The hours I can offer for tuition are some day-time slots (ideal for adult learners not tied down to school times), and after-school for younger learners between 4-6pm. I don't tutor in the evenings, nor at weekends, except by very occassional prior arrangement.
Tutoring Experience: I have taught English in secondary schools for 5 years. During this time I taught across KS3 (including preparing pupils for their SATs tests). I also taught at KS4, and prepared pupils for their exams at GCSE, and A/S and A level for KS5 pupils.
I wrote and delivered the GCSE English course at an intensive Easter GCSE revision school, and I now am a GCSE examiner for one of the major examination bards, which means I know exactly what markers are looking for when they are marking those all important exam scripts!
More recently, during the past 5 years, I have been teaching in primary schools on a supply basis, where I've taught literacy and numeracy to pupils of all ages in KS1 and 2, as part of my daily work. I am experienced in preparing pupils for SATs tests at the end of KS2, as well as for 11+ examinations.
I have also taught in a special school, so am used to encountering and teaching pupils with a wide range of Special Educational Needs. I am experienced in teaching English to speakers of other languages, having held such a post for a year in a multicultural school where pupils spoke over 70 languages.
I have also been giving private musical tuition on the piano and flute for a number of years.
Tutoring Approach: I am a positive and encouraging teacher, who likes to tailor tutoring to the individual needs and learning styles of each pupils and to teach at a pace which is comfortable for each learner. I believe in setting regular homework and tasks to be completed between sessions, in order for pupils to revise and practise skills. In the case of pupils who are still at school, I like to maintain a relationship with parents, even if the pupil travels independently to lessons, in order to feedback to parents on the pupils work and progress, and lI like them to do the same with me. I believe that for a tutoring arrangement to be fully successful, it needs to involve the parent, tutor and pupil all working together towards shared goals.
