Information About Simon

Personal Description: I am currently studying Law at King's College London (ranked 4th in the UK for Law) and have achieved consistently high marks in my modular results (2.1 and higher). Indeed, this year I was awarded a monetary sum for achieving the highest grade in Intellectual Property, one of my four papers. I currently head the Student Law Society which is the largest society at King's, catering for over 700 members helping them through their careers applications and providing them with social activities (including sports) while studying for their degree.

In my spare time, I enjoy drama and have taken leading roles in both classic and contemporary plays. In this regard, I have both written and directed a short 15-minute comedy entitled 'Jim the Pirate' which was performed in front of an audience of 300. This was well-received by the audience who consisted both of children and adults.

My main interests in relation to history include the American Civil war as well as Irish history dating from 1780 up until 1928. In relation to Law, I have a particular interest in Intellectual Property Rights, the Law of Property and the Law of Trusts although I am well versed in the Criminal Law, Contract Law, European Law, Constitutional and Administrative Law and the Law of Personal Taxation. In terms of academic worth, I was ranked in the top five for A levels at my school (St. Edmund's College, Ware) and received a one quarter scholarship both for drama and music and a one half scholarship for commitment to my school and House, of which I was the head of Drama and a Prefect.

Tutoring Experience: During my time at King's, I have been involved in the Street Law Project as a Group Leader. This involved preparing a presentation on varying aspects of the Law for children aged from 11 to 18. Different methods were used in order to explain the various complexities involved, such as interactive presentations, enacting court proceedings and the use of Power Point presentations.

Tutoring Approach: As a tutor, I believe the best approach is one which involves a methodology combining both short and long term learning techniques. As such, I am in favour of providing the student with spider diagrams outlining the basics of the course (the short term methodology), encouraging them to use these as a basis for constructing their own diagrams which, I have found, guarantee exam success in most cases (the long term methodology).

In relation to Law, I believe in an in-depth study of the areas to be covered and would provide the student with case extracts, short summaries of academic articles relevant to the area involved and would encourage the student to formulate their own views on the area in question. In typical legal fashion, these views would be challenged and would allow the student to learn the skills necessary to pass both 'Law' and 'History' papers as, to be a high achiever in either area, these skills are a prerequisite.

English (Literature) requires an in-depth study of the reasons behind the author's writing a text, the various interpretations of that text and the literary techniques used by the author to get their point across. Of course, a detailed knowledge of the text is required as a starting point which the student will be required to have in order to succeed. However, as a tutor, I would work upon this through encouraging the student to consider the various interpretations of a text and choose the few that they believe to be the most viable.
