Information About Thomas
Personal Description: I am currently studying BSc (Hons) ICT at the University of Huddersfield. I have very good general computer skills and am skilled with software like: word processing; spreadsheet design; database development; web authoring; and image editing software. I am very familiar with Microsoft Office packages, but am capable of learning new software very quickly. I am a very patient person with a kind nature. I am currently a serving member at my local St. John Ambulance division, where I am learning many first aid skills.
When I gained my degree I will be enrolling on a PGCE to become a Primary School Teacher. And I feel that I have many of the skills required to become a teacher already.
Tutoring Experience: I have had lots of experience working with children; predominantly in an educational setting but also in youth groups. Last term I worked at South Crossland Junior School as a voluntary teaching assistant. I very much enjoyed my time there and learnt a variety of teaching skills. Also, to get more involved with working with the children I helped supervise them during breaks, I found this very useful to build a better relationship with the pupils, as I only could attend once-a-week. This term I am conducting my work experience at Holmfirth High School. Whilst my specialism is ICT, I assist in a variety of classes to better observe the practices of different teachers, I currently assist in the following lessons: ICT; Science; Geography; and Mathematics.
Also I am heavily involved in Scouting and have been an Assistant Cub Scout Leader since December 2006; Cub Scouts are aged 8-10 years. Prior to moving to university I was involved with Beaver Scouts (aged 6-8 years) for 3 years as a Young Leader. I have also had experience of working with Scouts (10-14 years) and Explorer Scouts (14-18 years). I have learnt much about working with and educating children since I have been in Scouting.
As I work with children a lot I have a current CRB check (dated November 2007) and have been on many child protection courses.
Tutoring Approach: My teaching philosophy is to go at the students learning pace whilst encouraging them to try and push themselves. I always ensure the student has a good understanding of the subject but I also pose questions to challenge them, which I find works well to keep them interested. I try to make the teaching atmosphere easy-going but supportive and challenging (depending on the child). I try to make it easy for students to trust me, so that they find it easier to tell me if they are struggling with in a particular area.

From Michelle Pinch (5/5): Thomas is a calm and understanding math tutor for my 12 year old son. He has listened to both of us about his special needs and he has made a real effort to make my son understand what he has been struggling with. He is a very likeable boy and I would recommend him as a tutor for any child.
