Information About Tim

Personal Description: I am local to East Kent where I was educated and raised. I left school ten years ago and completed a masters degree in Oceanography at Southampton University, for which I got a first. After my time in Southampton I moved to Norwich where I completed a PhD in Marine and Atmospheric Biogeochemistry at the University of East Anglia. When I was at UEA the thing that I enjoyed doing most was working with undergraduates during practical sessions, seminars and field courses and this led to my decision to become a teacher when I finished my PhD. I qualified as a science teacher last year and am currently employed as a full time Physics teacher at a very popular and oversubscribed school in East Kent.

Tutoring Experience: My interest in teaching really began when I worked at a sailing school during school and university holidays. I qualified as a sailing instructor at the age of 19 and spent many happy summers teaching small groups of mostly children, but occasionally adults, how to sail. I also taught a bit of sailing in Southampton and when I heard that I could be paid to demonstrate chemistry practicals and calculations to first years in my final year, naturally I wanted to do it. When I was a PhD student at UEA I did the same thing - demonstrating chemistry practicals, helping small groups with calculations, supervising field courses and chairing seminars. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to make a career of it and I did a Graduate Teacher Programme in Science at Canterbury Church University and I now hold Qualified Teacher Status. I currently teach Key Stage 3, GCSE and AS-Level physics in a popular state school, and I also have experience of teaching chemistry, biology and maths in the same school.

Tutoring Approach: Tutoring sessions will be tailored to the needs of the tutee and I believe that having a focus for the session is very important. I would expect to communicate with a tutee prior to a session and to have a good idea of what we are going to achieve before we start. For example, it might be that improved exam performance is the goal and to achieve this I would work through example exam questions with a tutee, show them where the marks are and how to get them. This would give the tutee the confidence and ability to tackle questions and practice alone after the session and I think that is very important. Private tuition does not come cheap and the sessions are relatively short, and if it is to work well I believe that the tutee must finish the session with the confidence and knowledge to work independently afterwards so they can consolidate what they have learnt.

Tutoring during the day can be arranged during school holidays. I have an enhanced CRB disclosure for my job as a teacher, however I will only tutor minors in the presence of a parent or trusted guardian. Tutoring available at my home or tutees home, I may adjust the fees slightly to cover travel costs for home visits.
